  • Introduced teaching of SouthEast Asia as a regular course in collaboration with Depts of Geography and History, the 1st time this area was studied at an Indian University

  • Introduced Specializations of “Development Anthropology” and “Population Anthropology”, another 1st in the country for Anthropology Departments.

  • First University Department in the country to produce ethnographic films. The first films were on the Saora of Ganjam and on the Upper Indravati Dam region, Koraput. 

  • Organized the Silver Jubilee of the Department in 1982

  • His leadership ensured the Department getting the DSA (Department of Special Assistance) during his tenure in 1988 that led to the Department now (since 2009) being one of the two Centres for Advanced Study in Anthropology in the country (the highest ranking by the UGC)
