This Library houses as its most prized collections, all the writings (books and research papers) of Professor Mahapatra along with his field Notes that give an insight into the working of a master ethnographer. It also houses Professor Mahapatra’s personal library including classics of anthropology and social sciences from the 1950s (many of which are rare and out of print books). It has a good collection of writings on Tribal Studies, Development Anthropology and South-East Asia, particularly Bali and Indonesia. It must be mentioned that Professor Mahapatra was a classical anthropologist, who went to other countries to study their culture from a comparative perspective and was a pioneer among Indian anthropologists in this regard.

This Library has been supplemented with books on social sciences, particularly Economics and Development Economics and books on Social Sciences that were donated to Bakul Foundation set up by Professor Mahapatra’s son, Sujit in the same premises. The two libraries will complement each other as the LKM Centre is a Research and Reference Library in the Social Sciences whereas the Bakul Library is a public library with books of general interest for children and adults.
